Governorship candidate charged with treason in Nigeria

LAGOS — An opposition politician has been charged with treason after clashes killed four and left a campaign office for the president burnt in Nigeria's main oil region, police and local media said Saturday.

"He was charged to court in Abuja," police spokesman Olusola Amore said of John James Akpanudoedehe, an opposition candidate for governor in Akwa Ibom state in the Niger Delta region. "He is remanded in prison custody."

Amore said he was not aware of the exact charges, but local media said it was four counts of treason, which is punishable by death in Nigeria.
His lawyer could not be reached, but local media reported him as calling the charges "trumped up." A spokesman for his party also did not return calls.
An attack on his convoy on Tuesday led to reprisals and clashes that Akpanudoedehe was accused of instigating, local media reports said.
