April polls: INEC registers 73 million voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission yesterday released the official certified voter register with 73, 528, 040 million eligible Nigerians captured during the just concluded registration exercise.

INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega released the certified voter yesterday with an increase from the 67, 764,334 million voters released as provisional figure of registered voters.

Some states got increased number of voters after INEC concluded its verification exercise while some of the state had slight decrease of actual voters figure.

According to the certified register, Niger State which had 721,485 thousand voters in the provisional register now has 2,175,421 million voters, Bayelsa had 472,389 thousand in the provisional register but now has 591,870 in the final register.

Some of the states that got decreases in actual number of voters include Kano state which had 5,135,415 million but now has 5,027,297 million voters and Lagos that had 6,247,845 million now has 6,108,069 million voters.

The commission said after cleaning up the provisional register it found 870,612 thousand multiple registrations.

INEC said it is going to release the identities of all those that engaged in multiple registration and will soon commence prosecution as they have committed an act of electoral fraud.
