Suspected Islamists kill two police in Nigeria

LAGOS — Suspected Islamists have killed two policemen in attacks in northern Nigeria in the past four days, police officers said Thursday, the latest in a spate of such incidents that have left dozens dead.

The attackers shot one policeman at his house on Wednesday night, police chief for Borno state Mohammed Jinjiri Abubakar said.

"They trailed him to his house. He was in mufti, so it must be people that know him," he said refusing to give more details.

One suspect has been arrested.

In a separate incident, an undercover policeman was shot and killed at his house on Sunday night, another senior police officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Previous similar incidents have been blamed on an Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which launched an uprising in 2009 put down by a brutal military assault.
