Nigeria: Cross River NDLEA Nabs 142 Drug Suspects



Calabar — The Cross River State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has seized about 512.59 kilogrammes of hard drugs.

A breakdown from the NDLEA disclosed that cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) accounts for 463.46 Kilogrammes; 48.99 grams of cocaine and 0.14 grams of heroin.

The NDLEA said at least 142 suspects were arrested at various times as suspects linked to the hard and illicit drugs.

Among those arrested are 53 women, the NDLEA disclosed.

State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Kayode Adeniyi, said most of the drug suspects were arrested between December 1 and 31, 2010.

"During the annual Calabar carnival, which spanned from 1st December-31st December 2010, the command made significant arrest of 82 persons for drug-related offenses," Adeniyi said.

He disclosed that the efforts of the command in prosecuting drug offenders have yielded positive result as no fewer than 34 convictions were made; six persons bailed and 20 other cases are still pending in various courts in the state.
