The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is going to appeal against last Thursday’s ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja that stopped gubernatorial elections from being held in five states due to tenure issues because it is not satisfied with the ruling.
Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman Mr. Kayode Idowu told Daily Trust yesterday that the commission believes there are issues that require legal clarifications on the matter.
He said, “The commission believes that there are issues that need to be clarified by the court on this matter, and that is why it will soon approach the court of appeal for legal interpretation. A decision to appeal the judgment has been reached and in a matter of few days, the commission’s lawyers are going to commence the process.”
The high court judgment ordered INEC not to conduct governorship elections in the five states of Kogi, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Sokoto and Cross River states.
Governors Ibrahim Idris, Murtala Nyako, Timipre Sylva, Aliyu Wamakko and Liyel Imokewon rerun elections in 2008 after their victories in the 2007 elections were nullified by the courts.
