THE recent bombings across the country brought untold sorrow to many families. It is sad that scores of human lives had to be wasted by a few disgruntled elements in the society in such gory, painful and demeaning manner before the Federal Government and its security agencies woke from a deep slumber to think of addressing the serious security challenge that the country faces.
This is unarguably a reflection of the failing character of the Nigerian state. The incident advertised the inability of government and its agents to respond to the dare-devilry of fast paced criminal elements who always vanish into thin air after committing atrocities.
Worse still, the nation is being ridiculed internationally and so, President Goodluck Jonathan should feel disturbed because it is his administration that is being ridiculed and that is being portrayed as having failed.
The national security system has been seriously compromised in the past few months, no compliments to the multiple security agencies that seem to confuse each other with multiplicity of roles. It is not an understatement that the state agents have so far proved inept at pre-emptive intelligence and espionage activities. Even post-crime investigations have been anything but encouraging. Only a radical change in operations or a complete overhaul of the agencies could bring the desired improvement.
