Nigeria: Imo Govt Approves N1 Billion Agric Loan for Farmers

Owerri — Imo State Government has set up a five- man committee to oversee the disbursement of N1 billion agricultural loans to farmers in the state, in its effort to encourage farmers in the state.

Already, the government has provided N500 million for first phase of the exercise. The amount is to be disbursed to genuine farmers in the 27 councils of the state.

A statement in Owerri by Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Longers Anyanwu, he is to assume the chairmanship of the committee, while the Commissioners for Commerce and Industry, Education, and Special Duties, Dr. Chris Eze, Prof. Jude Njoku and Dr. Kelechukwu Okpaleke, respectively, will serve as members.

The chairman, while addressing the committee, disclosed that the governor has approved the N500 million for immediate disbursement, adding that only farmers who formed cooperative groups and possess insurance cover as well as tax certificates, will benefit.
