The Intrigues, Horse Trade of Jonathan’s Victory

 

THURSDAY’s victory of President Goodluck Jonathan at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary was characterised by intrigues and horse trading, with PDP governors said to have played a major role in his emergence.

Saturday Triune findings showed that Jonathan owed the landslide victory against his main challenger to the insistence of PDP governors to back him, based on an accord reached between them, first in September last year when the president formally declared interest to run for the highest office in the land.

The governors also reiterated their support for the presidential ambition of Jonathan during the last National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP.

A survey conducted from the camps of PDP governors also revealed that the fear of Atiku was the reason the governors preferred to queue behind Jonathan.

Most of them are said to regard the former vice president as too smart to be made the president, as they felt he would become uncontrollable if given the presidential power.
