MEND endorses Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid for the 2011 presidential election received a boost on Saturday when the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) throwing its weight behind his aspiration. In a statement by MEND’s spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, the movement, which has claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks in the country, hailed the Presidents handling of militancy in the Niger Delta.

The group also indicated that it would change its mode of operation in 2011.
According to the MEND, “In the coming year, we will review our mode of operation. We have seen strong indications that the Federal Government of Nigeria headed by Dr Goodluck Jonathan is serious with the Niger Delta Question.
“We support and embrace the President’s order to the Military to rebuild Ayakoromor and halt any planned hostilities on civilian Niger Delta communities”, the group said.

MEND who had rejected the government’s amnesty program also promised to “embrace a revamped Post-Amnesty initiative and work to make the Niger Delta a better place for all human beings”.
