Nigeria: Chaos Nearly Mars Meeting of 46 Opposition Parties:
Abuja — A timely intervention averted chaos at the meeting of 46 opposition parties on Thursday. Tempers rose after a disagreement; and, to avoid embarrassment, some of the leaders left the venue, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja. The parley was chaired by former Lagos State Governor, Lateef Jakande.
Those who walked out included former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nasir el-Rufai.
For some minutes, the venue became rowdy - with the scene watched helplessly by Olu Falae, Pat Utomi, Charles Nwodo, former Yobe State Governor, Bukar Ibrahim, and House of Representatives Minority Leader, Ali Ndume, who represented the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Chairman.
The ugly incident happened before the arrival of Jakande. His later arrival made the organisers to appoint Rashidi Shitta-Bey to chair the event in an acting capacity, and to proceed with it at 1 p.m., two hours after it was billed to start.
