Former president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujahid Asari -Dokubo-remains as controversial as ever. In this interview with with LEADERSHIP SUNDAY’s SHUAIB SHUAIB, he holds amongst other things that the issues that sparked the struggle for the independence of his people remain unresolved. He also spoke on several topical issues.

In recent months, there has been a resumption of militant attacks in the Niger Delta. This is despite the amnesty programme that is in place. Who do you think is behind it and what are the motives?
I cannot speak on behalf of militants because I am not one. I also never took amnesty. The amnesty was awarded to people in the Niger Delta, we and our people were never part of it. But there are different reasons for different attacks. Some people are pirates, some are petty criminals and some are oil thieves. When the security confronts them, they carry out attacks and clash with the security.
