The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Peter Orubebe has complained that the N59.72 billion allocated to his ministry, in the 2012 budget submitted to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday is too paltry.
Elder Orubebe, who also expressed concern that laudable economic empowerment programmes that were desirable for the development of the once neglected region, were marred by the continuous short falls of the ministry’s appropriation and release. He pointed out that funding of the ministry’s budget could be augmented by administrative five per cent of revenue accrue able from enhanced oil production in the region.
Orubebe recounted the challenges of development in the region, when he played host to members of the House Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, led by the Chairman, Hon. Warman Ogoriba. The members who were on an over sight visit to the ministry, were told by the minister that, not less than 25 on-going community projects designed to hook the region to the national grid, would be discontinued, due to short falls in the money released for the actualisation of the planned development of the region.
