5 December 2011

IN order to check the extravagance of top public office holders, including governors and ministers during foreign trips, President Goodluck Jonathan has introduced a mechanism that will monitor the officials’ spending habits while abroad.

To intimate those concerned to  the details of the new measure and inform them of the need for strict compliance, the presidency will, today, hold a workshop for governors, ministers and other top government functionaries in Abuja.

A presidency source said the president was worried by repeated complaints of profligacy and shopping spree  by retinue of aides, who accompany governors and ministers abroad.

The workshop will also inform the participants on what constitutes money laundering while on foreign trips and impress on them the need to avoid it.

It was gathered that a memo to that effect had been circulated to the participating functionaries by the National Security Adviser, General Owoye Azazi.
